4th January 2011 - Newcastle United set Twitter guidelines for players
Newcastle United has fallen foul of Twitter – after a player tweeted details of an injury that the manager was hoping to keep quiet.
José Enrique told his Twitter followers that he’d miss the team’s game next through injury. However, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew intended to keep Enrique’s absence quiet ahead of the club’s next game against Tottenham.
Pardew has now said the club will be ‘giving a presentation to the squad about the current format of information’ to avoid any further embarrassing leaks about the fitness of players and tactics for forthcoming games.
Newcastle isn’t the first and won’t be the last high profile organisation to fall foul of Twitter.
As Pardew points out, he can’t stop ‘stop freedom of speech’ but this example only serves to highlight the importance of having policies and guidelines in place on using social media for anyone who is either employed or represents an organisation.
